Day 70 (October 29, 2006) - Sedona, AZ | |||
|
We are visiting the rest of Sedona this morning before heading west towards Las Vegas, we will stop along the way to break up the ride. We take a free trolley to the town and the driver tells us a bit about how Sedona came to be. Art galleries abound, as do alternative medicine centers, holistic and spiritual centers and jeep tours among the red rocks which surround the town. My guide book had suggested a trip up Airport Road to watch the sunset, but since we won't stick around for that, a daylight view from there will have to do. It's beautiful from up top, you can see all the hills around with an unobstructed view. Back through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. We cannot park anywhere in the canyon since we do not have a "Red Rock Pass", a seasonal parking sticker, so we stop at a viewpoint almost at the end of the canyon. While Petr is driving, I read in my guide book that the mythical Route 66 cuts through Flagstaff and has one of the longest and best preserved stretches of memoriabilia between here and Oatmen, AZ. It's in our direction and we decide to follow it instead of the highway. We hit Williams, AZ famous as a train depot servicing the Grand Canyon. The town itself is standing still in time, we cross the sad-looking downtown on Route 66 and cannot imagine how lively the town must be during the week, if this is what goes on during the weekend: nothing at all. We then drive through Seligman, there's not a place to park the RV and we must continue, but here I would have taken a few interesting pictures of the good old '50s. For aficionados and people interested in what Route 66 in AZ is all about, I have a website: www.azrt66.com, with info, photos and trivia to your heart's content. Today we are sleeping in Kingman, still on Route 66, where we arrive at sunset. |
